Florida's Mini COBRA | |
![]() | Florida's "mini-COBRA" provides an opportunity for continuation of health insurance coverage for employees working for certain small employers of less than 20 employees. Unlike federal large group COBRA, the law holds insurance companies rather than the employers largely responsible for the implementation of key requirements. For example, insurers must provide information about the right to continue coverage under mini-COBRA and the steps in requesting the continuation of coverage in the policy, and they must provide plan booklets to each employee when they enroll onto the plan. The mini-COBRA continuation of coverage period is for 18 months. The coverage may continue for an additional 11 months under certain defined circumstances. The mini-COBRA law also features another key difference from federal COBRA in that the employee must contact the insurer within 30 days of the qualifying event to begin the continuation process. |
